Zywave: What It Is, Where miEdge Fits, and the Alternatives

Published · Updated · By Benefit Signals · Markdown version

Zywave is a Milwaukee-headquartered insurance software company whose portfolio spans quoting, analytics, compliance, rating engines, client engagement and data solutions for carriers, brokers and MGAs. Its prospecting product is miEdge, which covers personal lines, commercial lines and employee benefits. Zywave states that more than 15,000 insurance carriers, MGAs, agencies and brokers use its software, including all top 100 U.S. insurance firms. Pricing is not published.

Most benefits brokers meet Zywave sideways -- through a quoting tool the agency already owned, or through miEdge, which they may not realize is a Zywave product at all. This page sorts out what Zywave is as a company, where the prospecting piece sits inside it, and what the realistic alternatives are if prospecting is the only part you need.

What is Zywave?

Zywave is an insurance software company headquartered at "10100 W. Innovation Drive Suite 300 Milwaukee, WI 53226." It describes itself as "the largest provider of digital quoting for insurance brokers and agents" and references "30+ years of Insurance Expertise." Its published portfolio spans quoting, analytics, compliance, data solutions, rating engines, client engagement tools and agentic AI capabilities, organized under solutions for insurance carriers, brokers and MGAs.

On scale, Zywave states: "15,000+ Insurance Carriers, MGAs, Agencies, and Brokers, including all top 100 U.S. Insurance Firms use Zywave," alongside a "95% Retention Rate" and "8k+ Agencies Connected."

That breadth is the thing to understand about Zywave. It is not primarily a prospecting company; it is a broad insurance software platform in which prospecting is one product line. For an agency that already runs Zywave quoting or compliance tools, adding prospecting inside the same vendor relationship is a genuinely reasonable decision, and single-product vendors -- us included -- cannot offer that.

Where miEdge fits

miEdge is Zywave's "Lead Generation & Prospecting Solution." Zywave describes it as "the only prospecting platform built specifically for insurance," covering Personal Lines, Commercial Lines and Employee Benefits, and publishes counts of "85M households," "4M+ employers," "400M insurance-relevant data points" and "40+ sources" -- naming Form 5500 filings, DOT records, OSHA data, workers' comp filings, IRS data and public records among them, with "10+ years of Form 5500 filing history" on the benefits side. It is available as the miEdge App, miEdge Analytics, a Data Portal, a Lead Insights API, and CRM integrations for Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics. The application is at miedge.net.

Zywave pricing

Zywave does not publish dollar pricing for miEdge or, so far as we can find, for its other products; buying runs through a quote. A Capterra listing for the prospecting product shows a starting price of "Contact vendor" with no free trial. If you see per-state or per-seat figures for miEdge on a third-party comparison site, check the publication date before budgeting against it -- several circulating figures are old and we have not been able to verify any of them as current.

Zywave alternatives for benefits prospecting

If what you actually need is group-insurance prospecting rather than a platform, the realistic alternative set is short. Each of these has a genuine strength, and the price column is what each vendor publishes itself.

Platform or point solution: how to decide

What Benefit Signals does instead

We read the filed record on 85,931 employer groups, built from 3.2 million Schedule A insurance contracts, and answer two questions rather than every question. Change signals tell you who: the incumbent broker's position has changed, the business itself is in motion, or the economics sit out of line for a group that size. The Renewal Clock tells you when: the filed policy year end, to the day, on the 85,788 groups that carry one. 46,595 groups carry a decision-maker on file, and a separate pool covers 831,896 small employers that file a retirement plan and have no filed group-health plan, each with fewer than 100 retirement-plan participants.

The model behind that ranking was trained on filings from 2016 through 2022 and graded against a 2023 filing cohort held out from model fitting. Likelihoods, not certainties — how the model was tested is published on the home page. "Winnable" is a residual left after excluding co-broker reorders and bulk transfers consistent with book sales or rebrands, because employer intent is not in a filing.

Price: $60 a month or $600 a year. The monthly plan includes a seven-day free trial -- card at checkout, first charge day 8, cancel before then and pay nothing. Annual has no trial and bills in full on day one. Both renew automatically until cancelled. We are not affiliated with Zywave or miEdge. Questions: contact us.

Frequently asked questions

What is Zywave?

An insurance software company headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, whose portfolio covers quoting, analytics, compliance, rating, client engagement and data solutions for carriers, brokers and MGAs. Zywave describes itself as the largest provider of digital quoting for insurance brokers and agents and states that more than 15,000 carriers, MGAs, agencies and brokers use its software.

Is miEdge part of Zywave?

Yes. miEdge is Zywave's lead generation and prospecting product, covering personal lines, commercial lines and employee benefits. Its application is hosted at miedge.net and its support documentation lives on Zywave's support site.

How much does Zywave cost?

Zywave does not publish dollar pricing. Buying runs through a quote, and a Capterra listing for the prospecting product shows "Contact vendor" as the starting price. Older third-party figures for miEdge circulate online but we could not verify any of them as current.

What are the best Zywave alternatives for benefits prospecting?

BenefitFlow for selling into the broker channel, Benefeature for per-product premium analytics with published pricing, the Judy Diamond American Directory of Group Insurance for searchable field depth, Insurance Xdate for cross-line x-dates, and Benefit Signals for renewal-date-first ranking inside one territory at a published $60/month or $600/year.

Do I need a full platform or just a prospecting tool?

It depends on how many jobs you are solving. An agency running quoting, compliance and prospecting benefits from consolidating vendors. A one- or two-producer benefits shop that only needs to know who to call this month is buying far more than it will use, and a point solution with published pricing is usually the better fit.

Is Benefit Signals affiliated with Zywave?

No. Benefit Signals is an independent product and is not affiliated with Zywave, miEdge, any carrier, or the U.S. Department of Labor. Every competitor fact on this page is quoted from the vendor's own published pages with the source URL and the date we checked it.
